Cashews may be high in histamine. Generally, cashews are marked as high histamine because they’re considered to have high levels of biogenic amines other than histamine. These use the same resources to clear from your system, so their presence can maintain high histamine levels (though not raise them directly). Foods like this are considered to be “histamine liberators,” meaning that they can trigger the release of histamine from other foods being eaten, though this concept has yet to be proven in a lab setting.
This is a shame, because cashews are otherwise quite healthy, a great source of both iron and magnesium. Once you’ve lowered your histamine levels below the threshold of what your system can handle, you may be able to reintroduce cashew nuts, but be careful if you’ve ever had a reaction to another nut, seed, or so-called ‘histamine liberator.’
